Vernon, thank you for reading and thank you for your empathy. While I am now in a place where I can write about a positive ending, back when I experienced these intrusive memories that was not the case. Thus, to pin on a happy ending would have been false for this poem. Nevertheless, I appreciate you reading and offering feedback.
You indeed inspired my empathy, but I'm a little resentful, having been vicariously taken through the revolting incident with you without being left with some glimmer of hope for your future. The poem seems to lack balance in that way.
Donald....I am a new poet and even newer to this community. What an emotional retelling of a very personal experience. Thanks so much for sharing this part of you with us!
Great questions, Linda. I'm so glad you are asking them. I guess surviving can be a complex process. I have a feeling artists have a special way of seeing and interacting with the world.

Pain is hard to overcome. Memories get buried, but never forgotten. We survive, but do we really? We know, but does the world understand? Such depth, such heartache.
The purpose of this poem was to allow the reader, especially one who doesn't understand what trauma is like day in and day out, to step into it and really be present to it. The pinball metaphor definitely aided in evoking the tone and the theme and those revulsive and sickening moments. It's also built off of the characters in my book so I have a very clear picture in my head of their voice and the way that they interact. And I can't wait for it to come out in the anthology THINGS WE HAVEN'T SAID.
Congratulations on your poem well deserved keep up the good work !

I have added a trigger warning at the beginning of this post.
