His Angel
Chapter 1
She watches him. She waits. It breaks her heart to see the fear in his eyes. The pain. She knows he suffers. She can see the tears he is fighting to control and she knows what he is thinking. Why me? Why did this have to happen to me?
He was uncomfortable sitting in the straight back chair. She could see him shift his weight from time to time and grimace afterward. He would crinkle his nose as the hospital gown rose, and she almost smiled as he would quickly pull it back down.
As time passed he drummed his fingers against the arm of the chair and rolled his eyes. He gave the appearance of being bored, but she knew he was nervous. More than nervous. He was terrified.
There were several more patients in the waiting room. Some of them were crying. Some of them had their heads hanging low. Some were just staring at a spot across the room. She could feel the tears glisten in her own eyes, yet she was not supposed to feel any emotions. How could she not feel?
“Riley Joyner,” The name came out as almost a shout in the quiet room. He gripped the arm of the chair and pushed himself up. She could see his fingers tighten on the arm of the chair and saw the effort it took for him to rise.
His legs were wobbly and it took a minute to get his balance. He had lost so much weight in the last year. The hospital gown fluttered freely, and it was probably a good thing they could wear their underwear underneath their gown.
He was halfway to the door and she looked around. No one rose to go with him. No one wished him luck. No one smiled for him, and no one cried for him. He was all alone. All alone on a cold impersonal slab in a hospital room full of machines.
From a distance, she heard the nurse’s words. “You can bring your support. They can be in the other room.” Cancer. Radiation. Alone. Those words journeyed through her mind.
Before he could say there was no one, she stood and closed the gap between them. This was it. This was the reason she was here.
