  50. Fozia Arif - United Kingdom
Who am I? A question I often ask myself… My name is Fozia, I was born in a small town in a little island in the last century. Now the little town is an expanding city and I guess I have grown too. I grew up in a big, colourful family, we spoke four languages at home and I mastered them all. My father was a hard worker but when he became unwell, we lived in poverty. I wrote my first poem at the age of thirteen after I found my mother collapsed in a heap, I thought she was dead. Even though I knew I was an artist, I had to enter the world of business from the age of sixteen. I continued until I was forty, at which time I became unwell with a chronic pain condition. The only way I could find to heal was by writing, it became a cathartic process and poetry flowed naturally for me. I wrote two plays for Black History Month about my home town, completing them gave me the strength and confidence to keep writing. The Artistic Director I worked with said ‘you can only write about what you now’, maybe that is why everyone’s writing and poetry is unique. I travelled for most of the 1990s and then arrived back in the place where my life began. Since arriving home both of my parents and my son’s father have died, leaving me as an orphaned widow and a single parent. No matter what age you are when both of your parents die you feel like an orphan in this world. I find solace from writing, especially poetry and it is the only skill that seems to come naturally to me.
